Aqueous extract of Bulbine natalensis Baker (Asphodelaceae) stem at 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg body weight was investigated for anabolic and androgenic effects in male Wistar rats. Sixty male rats were grouped into four (A-D) consisting of 15 each. Group A (control) was orally treated with mL of distilled water for 14 days while groups B, C and D were treated like the control except they received mL containing 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg body weight of the extract respectively. All the doses of the extract increased (P <) the testicular-body weight ratio as well as alkaline phosphatase activity, glycogen, sialic acid, protein, and cholesterol content of the testes except the single administration of 100 mg/kg body weight which compared well (P>) with the controls for glycogen and cholesterol. The testicular and serum testosterone concentration were increased except in the 100 mg/kg body weight where the effect on the tissue and serum hormone did not manifest until after the first and seven daily doses respectively. Testicular acid phosphatase activity, serum follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormone concentrations also increased at all the doses except in the 100 mg/kg body weight where the effect on the enzyme and the hormone did not manifest until after seven days. The increases were most pronounced in the 50 mg/kg body weight extract treated animals. The results indicate anabolic and androgenic activities of Bulbine natalensis stem in male rat testes with the 50 mg/kg body weight of the extract exhibiting the highest anabolizing and androgenic activities. These activities further support the folkloric use of the plant most especially at 50 mg/kg body weight in the management of male sexual dysfunction in South Africa.

Steroids can worsen existing skin pathologies. Athletes being treated for acne often stop responding to normal treatment regimens if they also continue to use the drugs. Some cases of comparatively benign acne can progress to the disfiguring inflammatory types. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which, for unknown reasons, immune cells attack skin cells, resulting in red, scaly patches. One bodybuilder had controlled his psoriasis condition through the use of a topical cream, but when he began using steroids, his condition considerably deteriorated. Eventually his psoriasis became resistant to treatment. But when he stopped using steroids, the psoriasis stabilized and again responded to simple skin-cream treatment. 6

You do not need to be a member of Cornerstone to experience some of the great programs and services that are offered both in our clubs and out in the community. Programs like personal training, massage therapy, Pilates Reformer and SummerKids Camp can all be enjoyed without Cornerstone membership. In addition, Cornerstone collaborates with local townships to bring specialized fitness programs to local parks and also offer township residents the opportunity to take select classes at our clubs. Through our partnership with Doylestown Health, Cornerstone has been able to bring wellness initiatives like Cancer Fitness, Diabetes Education, Cardiac Rehab, and Weigh to Lose to the community at large.

In addition to the mentioned side effects several others have been reported. In both males and females acne are frequently reported, as well as hypertrophy of sebaceous glands, increased tallow excretion, hair loss, and alopecia. There is some evidence that anabolic steroid abuse may affect the immune system, leading to a decreased effectiveness of the defense system. Steroid use decreases the glucose tolerance, while there is an increase in insulin resistance. These changes mimic Type II diabetes. These changes seem to be reversible after abstention from the drugs.

A very typical case of severe cholestasis due to anabolic steroid use.  Because the steroids were being used without medical supervision, the dose and actual duration of use of each preparation was unclear, but cholestasis usually arises within 4 to 12 weeks of starting a C-17 alkylated androgenic steroid.  The jaundice can be severe and prolonged and accompanied by severe pruritus and marked weight loss.  The serum enzymes are typically minimally elevated except for a short period immediately after stopping therapy.  The pattern of enzyme elevations can be hepatocellular, cholestatic or mixed.  Liver biopsy shows a “bland” cholestasis with minimal inflammation and hepatocellular necrosis.  Ma Huang has also been implicated in cases of drug induced liver injury, but is associated with an acute hepatocellular pattern of injury.
